Nepal’s government has withdrawn its sweeping ban on major social media platforms following widespread and often violent public backlash, marking a critical turn in the political turmoil gripping the country. The contentious decision- covering platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X-was originally imposed after the government demanded that these services register locally; those that failed to comply faced restrictions.

The ban triggered a powerful youth uprising led largely by Generation Z, who poured into the streets of Kathmandu and elsewhere, demanding both the restoration of digital access and a crackdown on corruption. The protests quickly escalated, with demonstrators clashing with security forces. The authorities deployed tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse crowds—tragically resulting in the death of at least 19 people and hundreds more injured. Amid the chaos, several political dignitaries' residences, including the parliament building itself, were set ablaze.

Facing mounting domestic and international criticism, the government issued an immediate reversal of the social media ban. Senior officials acknowledged the severity of the situation, and several members of the cabinet, including the Home Minister, tendered their resignations in the wake of the crackdown and civilian casualties. The Prime Minister also formally presented his resignation in an effort to ease political tensions.

In the interim, authorities imposed curfews in multiple cities and suspended public transport and schools to regain control. As the social media platforms came back online, protest messaging surged, amplifying calls for deeper reforms and accountability.

Human rights groups have condemned the use of excessive force and demanded transparent investigations. The resurgence of digital tools has empowered continued mobilization—underscoring how integral online spaces are for civic expression today.

Nepal now stands at a crossroads. As the nation grapples with rebuilding public trust, the fallout from these “Gen Z protests” signals a potent generational demand for democratic governance, digital freedom, and institutional responsibility. The country’s next steps—whether toward reform or regression—will be closely watched by observers across South Asia and beyond.
