PITT COUNTY – A local volunteer firefighter is expected to undergo surgery after breaking his leg when a wall collapsed during a house fire.

The chief of the Farmville Fire Department says Charles Tripp was trapped in brick nearly to his chest when the wall crumbled early Friday.

Vidant Medical Center says Tripp is in good condition.

Three fire departments responded to the 3:15 a.m. call for a house fire at 5621 Stantonsburg Road. Farmville Fire Chief Lee Keel says three other firefighters working alongside Tripp were able to get out of the way of the wall when it collapsed as they fought flames outside the house.

It took crews about two minutes to free Tripp, according to Virgil O’Neal, the chief of the Bell Arthur Fire Department.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but Chief O’Neal said early Friday there was no reason to think it was suspicious.
