Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens attacked and blamed a St. Louis prosecutor on Thursday, hours after a grand jury indicted him on a felony invasion-of-privacy charge related to an extramarital affair. Greitens has been accused of taking nude photographs of his mistress without her consent, and using the photographs to blackmail her into keeping the affair a secret.

Grietens was indicted and taken into custody last night. He was charged in St. Louis with a first-degree felony invasion of privacy.

In a statement, Kimberly Gardner (the circuit attorney for St. Louis) said the alleged incident took place in March 2015 and vowed to “hold public officials accountable in the same manner as any other resident.”
“As I have said before, I made a personal mistake before I was Governor. I did not commit a crime,” Greitens said in a Facebook post. “With today’s disappointing and misguided political decision, my confidence in our prosecutorial system is shaken, but not broken. I know this will be righted soon. The people of Missouri deserve better than a reckless liberal prosecutor who uses her office to score political points. I look forward to the legal remedies to reverse this action. This will not for a moment deter me from doing the important work of the great people of Missouri.”

There is near total bi-partisan support for an investigation. Democrats have called for Greitens to resign, but even members of his own party have added their voices to those pleas for the embattled governor to step down. Most Missouri Republicans seem to at least demand that a fair investigation take place.

“We will carefully examine the facts contained in the indictment and answer the question as to whether or not the governor can lead our state while a felony case moves forward,” House Speaker Todd Richardson, a Poplar Bluff Republican, told the Kansas City Star. “The people of Missouri deserve no less. We will begin the process of tasking a group of legislators to investigate these serious charges.”

Meanwhile, breaking with most of the outspoken individual members of the Missouri GOP, the official Missouri Republican Party account made an announcement via Twitter that blamed, you guessed it: conservatives’ favorite boogeyman, George Soros.

While it’s true that Soros has been in the news in Missouri lately, it has nothing to do with the Greitens case. Back in January, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Soros has been donating to ethics reform groups that, confusingly, have been transferring money between reform programs and creating a dark money campaign donation issue. It is, as usual regarding Soros, one of those things that looks less bad than it looks … misguided.

But the implication that Soros’s money forced an investigation in a revenge porn case is so far disconnected from reality, it might as well be Conservative Talking Point Mad Libs.
