Top NFL Quarterbacks Right Now
As the NFL regular season approaches the homestretch, it is time to look at the top quarterbacks in the league right now. Unsurprisingly, the two MVP frontrunners are both quarterbacks in Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson. The reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes suffered a string of injuries this season, and hasn’t quite returned to the historic play of last season. Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, and Phillip Rivers, all of whom are future hall-of-famers, now out of their prime years have made room for young quarterbacks to emerge as the new crop of the cream.
Heading into the season, Jackson’s throwing power and accuracy was the subject for debate. The former Heisman Trophy winner has risen as one of the top players in the league this season. He has thrown for 2,427 yards, only five interceptions, tied for the league-lead 24 touchdowns, and is third in passer rating (111.4). The speed and rushing ability Jackson showcased in his rookie season has carried over as he is ninth in rushing with 876 yards. Jackson has the Ravens in Super Bowl contention. He still needs to prove himself in the playoffs, but there is no doubt that Jackson will be one of the best quarterbacks of his generation.
In his eighth season, Wilson is playing the best football of his seven-year career. After Seattle’s defense led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl several seasons ago, Wilson and the offense have now taken the reins and turned the Seahawks back into Super Bowl contenders. Seattle has the fifth best offense in the league and Wilson is seventh in passing yards with 2,937. Also, Wilson is second in passer rating at 112.1, and tied with Lamar Jackson for the league lead with 24 touchdowns. Although he is not as dominant a runner or as spectacular as Jackson, Wilson is still playing at an MVP-level. As the highest paid player in the NFL, Wilson has the resume and the championship pedigree to make Seattle dangerous for any team.
The 2018 NFL season will forever be remembered as the Year of Mahomes. The Chiefs quarterback dominated headlines all season with his explosive style of play and winning the MVP. Despite missing time with an injury, Mahomes is still top ten in yards, touchdowns, and passer rating. Kansas City also has firm control over the AFC West and is the third best offensive team in the league. Mahomes will not win the MVP this year, but has not regressed and will remain a top quarterback in the league for awhile. He’ll be salivating at the chance to avenge his AFC Championship loss in last year’s playoffs and lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl.
Honorable Mentions: Dak Prescott (DAL)- leads league in passing yards and is third in touchdowns. Deshaun Watson (HOU)- top ten in passing yards, touchdowns, and passer rating and is an effective runner. Kirk Cousins (MIN)- leads league in passer rating, is 11th in passing yards, fifth in touchdowns, and has only three interceptions.
