Dehradun, Uttarakhand — Intense rainfall triggered what officials describe as a cloudburst in Dehradun early Tuesday, leading to the Tamsa River swelling and inundating the area around Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple. Authorities have issued a red alert for Dehradun and Tehri Garhwal, warning residents of more downpours and strong winds.

Locals said that the river’s flow increased sharply around 5 a.m., flooding the temple premises and surrounding areas. Acharya Bipin Joshi, a priest at the temple, observed that water entered the complex and debris accumulated around the shivalinga site. While the temple’s inner sanctum remained intact, damage was reported to shops and structures nearby. No casualties have been confirmed so far.

Under the warning from the meteorological department, the region can expect rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusts ranging between 62–87 km/h. Residents have been urged to stay indoors and avoid riverbanks and low-lying areas.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the affected zones and directed local officials, police, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to ramp up rescue and relief operations. He tweeted that district administration teams are on the ground assessing damage and ensuring public safety.

Flooding has disrupted daily life in Dehradun. Streets around the temple and other low-lying areas have been submerged, shops damaged, and debris carried in by surging water. Several roads are reported blocked, and many residents have been stranded or cut off.

The weather department’s red alert remains valid until 9 a.m. for the concerned districts. Authorities stress that conditions remain volatile, especially in hilly terrain where runoff and sudden water surges are common after heavy rainfall.

Emergency services are on high alert. SDRF, police, and local municipal workers are coordinating evacuation efforts in the worst-hit zones, while citizens are being asked to report emergencies immediately. Temple priests and local leaders are also helping spread awareness to ensure nobody ventures near swollen rivers or riverbanks.

As the skies remain cloudy and more showers are expected, officials are keeping a close watch on water levels. While the temple’s sanctum is safe, authorities warn that flash floods or further flooding could pose risks to residential and commercial properties.

With nature’s ferocity making its presence felt, cautionary measures and swift disaster response are crucial to minimize loss and avoid potential tragedies in Dehradun and surrounding districts.
