Dehradun Under Red Alert as Tamsa River Swells After Heavy Rains
Dehradun, Uttarakhand — Intense rainfall triggered what officials describe as a cloudburst in Dehradun early Tuesday, leading to the Tamsa River swelling and inundating the area around Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple. Authorities have issued a red alert for Dehradun and Tehri Garhwal, warning residents of more downpours and strong winds.
Locals said that the river’s flow increased sharply around 5 a.m., flooding the temple premises and surrounding areas. Acharya Bipin Joshi, a priest at the temple, observed that water entered the complex and debris accumulated around the shivalinga site. While the temple’s inner sanctum remained intact, damage was reported to shops and structures nearby. No casualties have been confirmed so far.
Under the warning from the meteorological department, the region can expect rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusts ranging between 62–87 km/h. Residents have been urged to stay indoors and avoid riverbanks and low-lying areas.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the affected zones and directed local officials, police, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to ramp up rescue and relief operations. He tweeted that district administration teams are on the ground assessing damage and ensuring public safety.
