In the wake of tragic deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh tied to allegedly contaminated Coldrif cough syrup, the Punjab government has swiftly moved to ban the sale, distribution, and use of the product across the state.

Health officials state the decision was prompted by lab reports indicating the formulation is “not of standard quality” and likely adulterated, endangering public health. Under the new directive, all stock of the syrup in Punjab must be withdrawn, and no further transactions involving the drug will be permitted.

Authorities have instructed retailers, wholesalers, medical practitioners, and hospitals to immediately halt any dealings with Coldrif. Any existing inventory is to be reported to the state drug authorities as investigation into the matter intensifies.

Meanwhile, neighboring Himachal Pradesh has also enacted a similar ban. Both states appear to be acting preemptively amid a larger national alert over pediatric cough syrup safety, following revelations about the presence of toxic substances in certain batches.

The government’s response aims to curb further casualties while state and central agencies probe manufacturing, supply chains, and accountability.
