United States Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID) introduced a bill this morning that would make it easier for any individual or business to discriminate against married same-sex couples. The legislation is similar to types that have been roundly rejected by Americans across the nation.

Lee and Labrador’s bill will allow public businesses and individuals who work for the government and taxpayer funded organizations to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. The bill specifically singles out same-sex couples, thus violating the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.

Freedom for All Americans campaign manager Matt McTighe released the following statement in response to Lee and Labrador’s bill:

“Americans across the nation resoundingly oppose discriminatory legislation like this. Even in red states like Indiana, Texas and Georgia, businesses large and small, faith and civic leaders and everyday Americans have spoken out against dangerous laws like these, and Freedom for All Americans will be working to stop harmful bills like this from advancing at every level of government.

“Every American should be given the freedom to live their lives without fear of discrimination. Unfortunately, Sen. Lee and Rep. Labrador’s bill will allow businesses, government employees and taxpayer funded organizations to discriminate against LGBT couples simply because of who they are.”
