The U.S. Supreme Court today ensured that every single loving, same-sex couple in the United States can enjoy the freedom to marry, a watershed moment in the ongoing fight for full equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans. Today’s comprehensive ruling from the Court means that no state can seek to obfuscate or obstruct the ability of same-sex couples to marry with archaic and ill-intentioned marriage bans.

Matt McTighe, campaign manager for Freedom for All Americans, issued the following statement:

“This is an historic and emotional day. The justices are joining a supermajority of Americans – 60 percent – in declaring that same-sex couples and their families deserve the same dignity and rights as everyone else. It’s a victory made possible by LGBT Americans and their families who came forward and shared their stories. People like Jim Obergefell, who would not stand by silently when his home state refused to recognize his legal marriage to his terminally ill partner of more than 20 years.

“While today is an enormous victory for marriage equality, we have by no means reached the finish line in the larger fight for equality. In too many states, hardworking LGBT Americans can be fired from their jobs, evicted from their homes, and denied service in restaurants, shops and even government offices – simply because of who they are. That’s a sobering thought on an exciting day like today, but it’s the truth.

“We’re not resting for a single minute in our pursuit of fairness and equality for all under the law. Today’s Court ruling sends a powerful message about our nation’s founding values, and Freedom for All Americans and our allies will keep working in Congress and in states across the country to ensure that every LGBT American is protected from discrimination.”
