On October 8, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking a significant milestone in India's aviation infrastructure. Located in Ulwe, approximately 37 km from South Mumbai, NMIA aims to alleviate congestion at the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and establish Mumbai as India's first urban center with dual commercial airports.

Key Highlights of Phase 1

  • Infrastructure and Capacity: Phase 1 includes a single terminal and runway, with an annual capacity of 20 million passengers. The terminal features 66 check-in counters, 29 aerobridges, and India's largest aircraft maintenance and cargo hubs. The airport's design is inspired by a lotus, symbolizing purity and beauty, and incorporates sustainable features such as a 47 MW solar energy generation capacity.

  • Connectivity: NMIA is designed to be India's first airport with multimodal connectivity, including water taxis, high-speed rail, metro, and road networks, enhancing accessibility for passengers.

  • Economic Impact: Developed by the Adani Group at a cost of approximately ₹19,650 crore, NMIA is expected to boost regional economic growth by facilitating easier access for businesses and tourists. The project reflects India's rapid growth in air travel and its broader push to modernize infrastructure.

Future Prospects

Upon completion, NMIA is projected to handle up to 90 million passengers annually and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo, supporting Mumbai’s status as a global aviation hub. The airport's development is part of India's broader efforts to enhance its aviation infrastructure and accommodate the growing demand for air travel.

The inauguration of NMIA signifies a transformative step for India in global aviation, positioning Mumbai alongside other major cities with multiple international airports. This development underscores India's commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and fostering economic growth through enhanced connectivity.
